Awarded as the 143rd Kentucky Derby champion, Always Dreaming held off a late charge from Battle of Midway, Looking At Lee and Classic Empire. Nevertheless, he claimed the roses by two-and-three-quarter lengths. In addition Always Dreaming has now conquered three consecutive races this year after finish second and third in his first two races.

It is the fifth consecutive year the favourite has won the Kentucky Derby. The only other time this happened was in the late 1890s. It is also evident that Always Dreaming became the first horse since 1933 to win the Kentucky Derby after not winning his first race until on or after January 25.

Jockey John Velasquez stated the following: "He responded right away. I think we came into the derby with a much better horse than we have in the past. Today was a different story. Got a nice position going to the wire. He got to relax and then waited to the quarter pole and he responded right away."

This was Velasquez's second triumph at the Kentucky Derby, last winning occurred in 2011 on Animal Kingdom. For trainer Todd Pletcher it was his second win in his career with his last triumph taking place at the Super Saver during 2010.

Trainer Todd Pletcher has now won the race twice in his career with his last win coming in 2010 with Super Saver.

Pletcher said: "I think he really came in here and knew it was game time, and he was ready to go. The most important thing to do is bring the best horse to the Derby, and that's what we were able to do."
